Undoubtedly the finest walking country in Somerset, and some of the best in the whole of southern England, lies at the western end of the county. The countryside here is largely owned by the National Trust, Exmoor National Park Authority or the Forestry Commission, and apart from recognised footpaths there is almost unlimited access across huge tracts of moorland and forest.
The challenging topography of the area, and the policies of landowning families in days past, have limited the spread of development. The result is that within minutes of stepping off an asphalt road you can be out of sight and sound of houses, traffic and people, plunging instantly into unspoiled and barely-tamed countryside.
However, if you fancy a lovely walk without hills, the canal towpath from Taunton through glorious Somerset countryside to Creech St Michael can be walked from The Castle Hotel. Then, of course, there are the Somerset Levels, a beautiful, haunting landscape, a walker’s idyll. There are moments when you’ll feel as though you’re the only person left on earth, such is the stillness. The River Parrett Trail (50 miles) will take you through the heart of the Levels and past some historic pubs and welcome tea rooms.
We can recommend a number of walks which can be accomplished easily within half a day. They present no great physical challenge, but they should not be undertaken without suitable footwear (trainers at the very least).
