The Castle Hotel is within walking distance of the Somerset County Cricket Club and is, without doubt, the finest hotel near Somerset Cricket Club. If you’re following your team to play us at the county ground, then a stay at the Castle is an excellent way of making the most of your cricketing visit.
The Somerset county ground is an impressive ambassador for the county, representing the passion for cricket of Somerset folk. It’s one of the finest cricket grounds in the country and is certainly a wonderful place to pass the time, watching first class cricket.
There’s no doubt that The Castle Hotel is a cricketers’ hotel, having played host to so many cricketing personalities, including the great Don Bradman, Viv Richards, Ian Botham and many, many more. Then there are all the cricketing personalities who have stayed with us, such as Henry Blofeld who joined us recently to regale guests with his cricketing anecdotes.
The Castle Hotel also established a tradition in the days of Don Bradman of baking a whortleberry pie for the team, when the visitors played their three day fixture against the Somerset County side in Taunton. The tradition was established when ‘The Don’ took a liking to this local delicacy in 1938, the first time the hotel presented one to the team. The last whortleberry pie to be presented to the Australian team was in 2001 when General Manager, Kevin McCarthy presented one to Steve Waugh.
So when it comes to seeking a luxury hotel near Somerset County Cricket Club, you need look no further. The Castle Hotel is steeped in cricketing history and folklore.
