Somerset is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful counties in England. The terrain is one of extremes from the haunting flatlands of the Somerset Levels to the wilds of Exmoor, from the popular beaches of Weston Super Mare and Burnham on Sea to the steep rocky cliffs beyond Porlock and Porlock Weir where Exmoor plunges into the sea.
The Castle Hotel is an ideal location from which to enjoy all that this part of Somerset has to offer. If you enjoy gardens, the national gardens treasure at Hestercombe House is nearby and well worth a visit. Similarly, the gardens at Cothay Manor are also a treasure as is the medieval manor itself.
Somerset is rich in handsome stately homes with glorious gardens, and the National Trust houses in Somerset are amongst the finest in the West Country; and are within easy reach of The Castle Hotel. Historic attractions such as Stonehenge and Glastonbury Tor and Abbey are within easy reach. So too are the beautiful cities of Bath, Wells and Exeter as well as the historic village of Dunster. Even closer is the 11th C Cistercian abbey, Forde Abbey.
Within easy reach of The Castle Hotel are the hills of Somerset, the Quantock Hills, the Mendip Hills and the Blackdown Hills. The minor roads across these hills contribute to driving in Somerset being such a pleasure.
Some of the best performing independent private schools in Somerset and Devon are conveniently located near The Castle Hotel, including King’s College in Taunton, Queen’s College in Taunton, Taunton School, Wellington School and Blundell’s School in Tiverton Devon.
Incidentally, the air in Somerset is exceptionally unpolluted and the sunshine therefore stronger than you may be used to. Do take care to use the appropriate sunblock and to wear a hat if you are planning to stay out for long…that’s if the sun ever appears! |
