From rambling castles to magnificently planted gardens, Somerset proudly displays the evidence of centuries of toil and dedication by landowning families and their staff. Few counties can offer such a wealth of elegant and historic homes or building styles which have been so fundamentally influenced by the local materials, from the grey lias of Mendips to the honey-coloured stone of South Somerset and the mellow, red sandstone of the west of the county.
Near The Castle Hotel are the famous gardens at Hestercombe House, as well the gardens at Cothay Manor, the superb medieval manor recently featured in Channel Four’s hugely successful series, Country House Rescue, starring businesswoman, Ruth Watson. Many of these magnificent houses and gardens in Somerset are now owned by the National Trust, though some are still in private hands. Most of the larger properties such as Montacute House, provide the focal point for a relaxing day out from Taunton and have restaurants or tea-rooms as well.
