The splendid Formal Garden was created by the famous British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and the planting scheme was designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Indeed, this is the finest example of collaboration between Jekyll and Lutyens. The garden has now been replanted to the original designs that were discovered in a potting shed.
The recently discovered ‘secret’ 18th century Landscape Garden at the rear of Hestercombe House will rival Stourhead when completed. It had disappeared completely to be rediscovered in 1992. This garden lies in a beautiful combe to the north of the house and is set in over forty acres of woodland. Restoration has revealed a superb example of 18th century garden style.
On the south side of the house is the Victorian Terrace, planted in the colourful style of the period and is changed twice a year.
