From rambling castles to magnificently planted gardens, Somerset proudly displays the evidence of centuries of toil and dedication by landowning families and their staff. Few counties can offer such a wealth of elegant and historic homes or building styles which have been so fundamentally influenced by the local materials, from the grey lias of Mendips to the honey-coloured stone of South Somerset and the mellow, red sandstone of the west of the county.
Many of these properties are now owned by the National Trust, though some are still in private hands. Most of the larger properties such as Montacute House, provide the focal point for a relaxing day out from Taunton and have restaurants or tea-rooms as well.
Opening times and admission charges should be checked by telephone. |
