3rd - 13th April
One of the most remarkable of the worldwide bicentennial occasions in 2009 to commemorate Josef Haydn's death will be this festival taking place at The Castle: ten leading ensembles with a special affinity for Haydn performing all 68 of the composer’s string quartets plus the quartet version of the Seven Last Words.
Haydn’s string quartets are among the marvels of civilized art, endlessly unpredictable in their strategies and structure, dazzling in the speed of thought, breathtaking in their expressive range. The very strong line-up of musicians in the Haydn Festival, in alphabetical order, is The Auryn Quartet, The Chilingirian Quartet, The Dante Quartet, The Doric String Quartet, The Endellion Quartet, The Fitzwilliam String Quartet, The London Haydn Quartet, The Sacconi Quartet, The Tokyo String Quartet and The Wihan Quartet.
Spread over eleven days, the festival is divided into five more-or-less equal modules, each of which is sold as a package which includes accommodation and dinner for two nights.
