THE BATON AT TAUNTON’S CASTLE HOTEL PASSES TO A THIRD GENERATION CHAPMAN
Regime change was the big news at this month’s Annual General Meeting of the Chapman family-owned Castle at Taunton.
The Board announced a new line-up at the top, with a younger generation stepping into the driving seat.
Kit Chapman formally stepped down as Chairman of the family firm to pass the baton to his son, 38 year-old Nicholas. And Sales & Marketing Director, Sarah Berry, 41, was promoted with a seat on the Board.
Sarah joins Director and General Manager, Marc Mac Closkey, 44, and Finance Director Jon Peilow, 34. The other family Board members are Kit’s wife, Louise, and Nick’s brother, 40 year-old Michelin-starred Berkshire chef, Dominic. Both Kit and Louise remain directors of the company but are no longer involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. Hospitality industry heavyweight, David Coubrough, 58, also stays on the Board as an independent non-executive director of the company.
Nick Chapman, a new media entrepreneur with an impressive track record of business success, was educated at Taunton School and Oxford Brookes University. “I grew up with The Castle”, he said. “It is one of Taunton and Somerset’s great institutions with over a thousand years of history to its name! My family are simply the present custodians. My grandfather, Peter Chapman, arrived here in 1950. He was succeeded by my father who put the hotel and the town on the international tourist map with a succession of Michelin-starred chefs and initiatives like our Music Weekends which have been running for almost 40 years”.
Sarah Berry has been Sales & Marketing Manager at The Castle for the past fourteen years. Her promotion to the Board comes in recognition of her outstanding performance, especially through the past six years of recession. “Sarah has grown into a key member of my team”, says Nicholas. “Her dedication, drive and hard work has helped to see us through these difficult times”.
Kit Chapman has the final word! “Succession management can be tricky in a family business! With us it has been seamless. We are fortunate to have a wonderfully talented team running The Castle. Both Louise and I have complete confidence in this close-knit group of top professionals. Our role now is to support and encourage them to take The Castle forward and upward. Meanwhile, both of us will remain involved in those areas where we have a special interest – Louise as “Director of Aesthetics”, me in the field of music, the arts and wine”.

“Superb in every way” claims the just-published 2014 Good Food Guide about Chef Liam Finnegan’s “carefully considered cooking”.
After a year’s absence due to a change of chef, The Castle storms back with Somerset’s top restaurant ranking.
The write-up in the Good Food Guide continues: “A lusciously elegant, 1920’s-style dining room, overseen by assured and friendly staff, makes a relaxed but suitably special setting for “imaginative and creative dishes informed by classic techniques and flavour combinations”.
Proprietor Kit Chapman commented: “I am absolutely thrilled to be back in The Good Food Guide. I am very proud of our great young team both in the kitchen and front of house”.
