Cothay Manor is a beautiful 14th century manor house near Wellington in Somerset, a remarkable example of an original English medieval manor house, one of the finest in England. The manor was featured in Channel Four’s successful series Country House Rescue, starring businesswoman Ruth Watson. The house has been faithfully restored over a period of 15 years by the owners, using furniture and fabrics of the period, and a visit will take you right back to medieval times. The Great Hall with its magnificent roof and gallery is simply breathtaking.
If you’re staying with us here at The Castle, a visit to the manor is strongly recommended. Indeed, there is no more appropriate hotel near Cothay Manor than the Castle Hotel.
A tour of the house will take you through the ancient gatehouse, the great hall and several glorious rooms where you will see many historic treasures, including 15th century wall paintings uncovered during restoration, stained glass windows and 17th century panelling.
However, a visit to Cothay is as much about the gardens as it is about the manor house; 12 acres of ancient gardens that are stunning. There’s the 183m long yew walk, a bog garden, a river walk, a cottage garden and so much more.
According to legend, the owner of Cothay Manor during the War of the Roses planted a red Lancastrian rose and a white York rose to celebrate the end of the war. Apparently, you can still see the roses flowering today.
