Not far from The Castle at Taunton is The Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton. This is the Royal navy’s national museum where you’ll find four exhibitions, over 90 aircraft and many thousands of flying and naval artifacts. This is the second largest naval aviation museum in the world.
One of the most dramatic of the four exhibition halls is the one that houses, perhaps surprisingly, the first Concorde ever built. You can go onboard for a look around and even visit the cockpit. However, it’s the Fly Navy 100 exhibition that’s choc-full of drama where you can see for yourself the progress of naval airpower from the first air ship to the latest fighter aircraft.
The Aircraft Carrier Experience will blow your minds. You’ll ‘virtually fly’ to the flight deck of HMS Ark Royal where two giant screens will feature a Phantom strike fighter and a Buccaneer strike bomber. It all feels so real. Then to the carrier’s island control rooms and the bridge.
There is such a phenomenal amount to see at the Fleet Air Arm Museum and it’s only a short drive from The Castle Hotel in Taunton. So if you’re looking for a hotel near the Fleet Air Arm Museum, you know where we are.
Other activities to enjoy whilst staying at The Castle include watching the cricket at the Somerset County Cricket Ground, enjoying the thrill of the races at Taunton Racecourse, taking a nostalgic trip to Minehead on the West Somerset Railway, getting into the carnival spirit at Bridgwater Carnival, the largest and best illuminated procession. |
